Mountain Dew

Granddad called it Mountain Dew
Long before the label did
Copper pot and creek water
Taught me how to make a living
Wood smoke rising through the pines
Sweet and mash working through the night
If the dogs start barking down the ridge
Kill the lamp and hide the light
Past that mountain door
Clear as the morning sky
Burns a little going down
Keeps the winter warm at night
Mountain Dew
Ain't never come in cans
Comes off a copper steel
Bout with a pair of hands
Every new man keeps sniffin' round
Like he knows where heaven hides
We've been moving jaws by moonlight
Since before my daddy's time
Every family's got a recipe
A story they swear is true
Round these hills your last name matters
So does your Mountain Dew
Past that mountain
