Hold The Other End

I saw
God in a flooded house
With a mattress in his hands
And a woman in her slippers
Saying, “I don’t understand”
I said, “I’ve got some questions
About the things you let go wrong”
He said, “Grab that corner, will you?
I’ve been lifting this too long”
And
I wanted a reason
Something bigger than the room
He was looking at my hands
Like there was work for them to do
Hold the other end
Get your shoulder next to mine
We can talk about forever
When she’s somewhere warm and dry
